The beautiful slice of Indonesian opalized wood used in this ring looks like a earthen brown landscape rising to meet a turquoise blue sky. It is set on a simple sterling silver base plate with two solid 18k gold accent beads. The band is made from heavy-gauge, flat 14k gold-fill wire that has been heavily hammmered, measuring ~8mm wide

Indonesian opalized wood is created when wood is buried by volcanic ash and silica is mobilized from the ash, penetrating the wood and replacing the wood grains, thereby petrifying them. The silica is often accompanied by other minerals that give the stone a wide range of colors: red, green, and purple colors are usually from iron; pink, black, and brown coloration is from manganese; and blues and greens are from copper.

I try to use every bit of metal on my bench and not let anything go to waste.
