Indonesian Opalized Wood is created when wood is buried by volcanic ash and silica is mobilized from the ash, penetrating the wood and replacing the wood grains, thereby petrifying them. The silica is often accompanied by other minerals that give the stone a wide range of colors: red, green, and purple colors are usually from iron; pink, black, and brown coloration is from manganese; and blues and greens are from copper.
